What to Consider When Looking for a Basin or Countertop
When you want to install a new bathroom sink or countertop, you should consider a few factors.
Sink Type
Sinks exist in many configurations to work within your space constraints and reflect your design preferences. Types include:
- Vessel: These sinks sit on top of the counter to create an eye-catching sculptural element in the room.
- Pedestal: As the name implies, this sink style relies on a column or pedestal to hold the basin up. It can fit into smaller spaces where a vanity isn’t plausible such as a powder room.
- Wall-mount: These sinks mount to the wall and often use exposed plumbing as a design element. As a minimal style, these sinks lend themselves to a contemporary look, and they function well in small spaces as well as larger spaces with optional storage solutions.
- Countertop: Integrated top sinks use a single molded piece to create your basin and vanity surface. This style can be used with a cabinet or wall hung with hidden wall brackets.
Size
As with any element in a room, you need to consider the dimension of your sink and how it will fit into your space. Bathrooms can be small spaces, especially if yours is a powder room, so it’s essential to think about how your sink’s overall size will affect how you move about the room. It’s also helpful to note that certain sink types take up more space than others.
A large vessel sink will look out of place in a small half-bath and dwarf the other elements. On the opposite end, a tiny basin in a massive room will look visually out of place. Blend your style and look with your room’s concept and physical layout. Large bathrooms are excellent spaces for double sinks and decorative vessel sinks.
For rooms on the petite side, consider smaller wall-hung basins or space-saving consoles. A small room doesn’t mean you can’t make a visual impact! Countertops can be tricky to integrate into small bathrooms, so you may have to rely on pedestal sinks, wall-mounted models and small consoles to make the room functional. Large bathrooms are ideal for double basins and vanity configurations.
Materials
Your finish material selection will greatly affect your room’s vibe, feel, functionality and upkeep.
- Porcelain: is an extremely durable material that’s highly resistance to scratches and wear over time. This style can add an architectural look to your space with marble and stone-look finishes.
- Ceramic: This material is scratch and chip resistant, offering durability similar to porcelain. The surface is completely sealed, and it can accommodate a wide range of colors or patterns.
- Solid Surface: A stone composite material which is durable and aesthetically pleasing. It is available in variety of finishes, colors and textures to fit your look and style.
- Glass: Glass sinks bring a shiny or matte texture to your space, and they can be frosted or glossy. This material lends itself excellently to all designs.
- HPL: standing for high pressure laminate, it is a water proof material comprised of multiple layers that are heated and simultaneously compressed available in a range of stone, wood and concrete look finishes.
- Fenix: is a new extremely durable material in matte colors. It is highly resistant to scratches, heat, abrasions and is non-porous making it great countertop selection.
